A possible scenario

Can you imagine the police calling to say that one of your drivers had been involved in a road traffic incident where a child had been injured. You then check your records for insurance and you also find a photocopy of the drivers licence tucked away in the back of his personnel file. It’s been there since he joined the company over 4 years ago.

The police then run the number through their computer and inform you he was banned from driving several months earlier for exceeding 12 points on his licence for insurance and careless driving issues.

The driver, a family man, had reckoned to tell you would have meant the sack so he took the calculated risk of silence and hoped to get his licence back next year before you found out.

How the story ends is up to your imagination and if you’re an optimist then you’ll be confident everything turned out fine!

What can be done?

A licence check, direct with the DVLA. is the only sure way of spotting those drivers that may not be eligible to drive your vehicles.

The check will cover the following items -

* Authenticity. There are many fake driving licences easily obtained on the internet for a fraction of the cost of learning to drive and passing the driving test
* Points. If a driver has any points the check will show how many, what for and when.
* Categories. The check will confirm which categories of vehicle the driver is entitled to drive.

Additionally it will check for the expiry date of the photocard licence. This is only 10 years from when issued. A lot of people are forgetting to renew their photo and reminders sent by the DVLA don’t always get through if a driver has moved home during this period.
